BARKER PROUDLOVE JOINS THE CLUB!
As their pioneering property director stands down, Calendar Club sets its sights on 270 units for Christmas… with a further 40 for Halloween
Specialist retailer Calendar Club is about to embark on its annual hunt to acquire over 270 short-term mall and shop units for Christmas 2017, together with 40 for their Halloween fascia to meet the rapidly growing demand for Halloween-related goods.
Williams Gunter Hardwick will lead the search in the southern half of the UK from their Bristol office, with Barker Proudlove of Leeds responsible for acquiring units in the northern half. All store acquisitions will be coordinated by Peter Daye, based at Calendar Club in Exeter.
The news comes as the company announced that, after 19 years at Calendar Club, Bill Nettelfield is stepping down from his role as Property Director. Bill will be leaving Calendar Club in early September to pursue other opportunities. Cooper Rose will also end their agency role.
“Bill has been fundamental to the growth and development of Calendar Club in the UK,” says fellow director, David Pike, “joining the company at its inception and working closely with the founding shareholders to grow the store estate and the business.
“He was key to the emergence of Calendar Club as the pre-eminent temporary retailer in the UK.”
In his role with the company, Bill was a pioneer in the development of commercialisation of shopping centre public spaces - and this was recognised in 2013 when he received the Outstanding Contribution to Commercialisation award at the inaugural Opal Awards ceremony, hosted by the (then) British Council of Shopping Centres (now Revo).
Devon-based Calendar Club sells over four million calendars a year, along with a range of diaries, family planners and other gifts. As well running as a highly successful online business, they sell many of their products in the run up to New Year through temporary space in shopping centres and High Streets all over the country.
The seasonal retailer opened its first 12 stores in 1998, while CalendarClub.co.uk was launched in 2003.
Around 160 mall units have already been secured to trade later in the year with the newly retained agents tasked with securing the required 110-120 shops across the UK for calendars, which are ideally 800 – 1,000 sq ft and a further 40 stores for Halloween at around 1,200-1,500sq ft.
Calendar Club has proved a popular addition to retail centres, occupying what would otherwise be empty units and adding footfall with a range of products that complements rather than rivals other occupiers. The more recent addition of Halloween, with exciting, experiential shops is also proving very popular with shopping centres across the UK.
